Summer has come and is quickly going. In just a few weeks Colorado will be graced with fall weather which means that your beautiful trees will slowly start to change colors and welcome you with the warm reds, oranges, and yellows that the state is known for. As this season approaches us, it’s time to shift the care routine that you’re providing to your trees. Continue reading to find out what you should be doing to ensure your trees remain healthy this coming fall and count on Lumber Jack and Jill for all your tree care needs — we provide service throughout Northern Colorado from our hometown of Fort Collins!

WATERING ROUTINE

Since temperatures start to drop around this time of year, most people think that they don’t need to water their trees as much. If the sun isn’t beaming on them at all hours of the day, there’s not a ton of hydration to make up for — right? Wrong.

Your trees still need quite a bit of moisture in order to keep healthy during these colder seasons. The same goes for winter, even with the snow that we get in Colorado. It’s this time of the year that trees are most likely to experience a drought in their water supply. That being said, it’s very important that you continue to water your plants during these intermittent breaks of warm weather. Your trees will thank you for it.

Pruning the Branches

The reality is that pruning has no one season to be done in, it needs to be happening on an as-needed basis. Fall, however, is one of the seasons that pruning is suggested. Since trees are losing leaves and branches may start to die, it’s the best time to clean them up. Having a professional come out and prune your trees will ensure that only unhealthy parts of the tree are being removed and prepare them for the coming seasons.

Mulch

Now that temperatures are going to start dropping, you will have to be a little bit more concerned about how your tree is doing given the temperature. One of the best ways to keep your plants a little warmer this fall is by putting fresh mulch around the trees. It acts as somewhat of a blanket to the roots and base of the tree. More than that though, mulch also helps retain water for the tree ensuring that the water it’s given lasts longer and doesn’t immediately evaporate. At the end of the day, this is a win-win task to complete.
